A mock-up is an essential tool in our arsenal. Essentially, it is a trial run of the pattern. We would draft the pattern, then make a rougher version with cheaper materials and fewer finishings and ship it to the client. After it arrives, the client would put it on, wear it for some time and give feedback about things that need to be improved via zoom. This helps us evaluate the fit, predict flesh displacement and see how the garment would behave under stress.
Here are some examples of situations when we request a mockup:
- a mock-up is a non-negotiable requirement when we're making a bodysuit. The area from the waist down is tricky to get right, and an error here can cost the client a lot of their privacy and comfort.
- We need a mockup to fit very large breast sizes and plus sizes in general. Plus sizes mean more variation in volume distribution. It's also harder to predict how the body would interact with the corset in motion.
- We might also request a mockup if the client is after a very specific fit, for example, if they want extreme waist reduction. A mockup is the only way to find out if the body can tolerate those extremities.
- It is best practice to rehearse your corset for an important event the same way you do trial makeup and hair. Corseted chest draws a lot of attention, and a mockup is the key to that attention being overwhelmingly positive.
This list does not cover all occasions but it should give you some idea.
